Double bass | vocals

Jiří Šubr, the double bass player, joined the band at the end of 2013. He started his musical career in primary school, where he learned violin at the Public School of Arts for about three years. In the early 80s he also learned guitar from his father. Later he taught himself to play double bass. During high school he co-founded the band Lojzíci together with Pavel Handlík. Jiří is also a member of the bands Barbecue and Tuplák.

Banjo | vocals

I'm not the interesting part — my banjo is. It came to me in Bean Blossom, Indiana, where bluegrass isn't just a genre — it's a language you breathe. It's got the stubborn pride of a 1960s Gibson and carries the number #81983. Frank Neat found it with its neck broken clean in two and decided it was worth saving. In June 2000, he built a Gibson #4-style neck for it, set it up with a Steve Huber tone ring, and brought it back to life. The flange dates to 1983, the hardware is Gibson, and since that summer, it's been in my hands. It doesn't belong to just one year. It's been rebuilt, refined, and given another shot. What started out as a '60s Gibson has turned into something else — a crossroads of decades, different hands, and different ideas about how a five-string banjo ought to sound. On stage with Sunny Side, it still carries itself like it's in charge — confident, seasoned, and right at home. I'm just the next chapter in its story. It doesn't try to prove a thing. It just plays.

Sunny Side’s frontman. His cultivated and trained tenor makes him one of the finest bluegrass singers in Europe. As a guitarist, playing a top-quality Rozawood guitar, he is known for his economical, clear, and tasteful style. At concerts he also entertains audiences with humor and fun competitions. Pavel began his musical career in 1991 during his studies at gymnasium with the band Lojzíci, with whom he recorded the successful CD ‘Vzpomínej’. Later he performed with Fifty Fingers, Shade of Blue, and Fámy. Since joining Sunny Side in 1999, the band has become his most important musical home and source of inspiration. Pavel is also a composer and performs his original songs with the band Barbecue. He likes to say that traditional bluegrass is the greatest challenge, because it cannot be cheated — the audience always knows.

Hušek

Mandolin | vocals

He graduated from Art School in Mladá Boleslav, where he studied violin and viola under Bohumil Holan. Honza discovered bluegrass at the age of 13. He first played guitar in Modrý Ksandy and later switched to mandolin. He also performed with Blue Fern, Fair Play Grass, and later founded Fork Road. After its breakup he joined North Bohemian Spare Parts as a violinist. In 2021 he joined the band Flastr and later that year accepted the offer to join Sunny Side. Besides bluegrass, he also played classical music with the Mladá Boleslav Chamber Orchestra, southern rock with Blackies, commercial rock with S.O.S. and Layla, and Celtic folk-rock with Isara. In Sunny Side he plays a 2003 F5 mandolin made by Czech luthier Suček.

Sunny Side is a Czech music band that performs an authentic interpretation of traditional bluegrass from the 1940s and 1950s — a time when this style of music was at the peak of its popularity. The band’s concerts reflect this era through their choice of songs, period costumes, and authentic sound. The show is not only about the music — humor and fun competitions are also an essential part of the performance.

The band was founded in August 1997 and has released several CDs over the years. Sunny Side performs at music festivals, concert halls, and clubs throughout the Czech Republic as well as across Europe.

On the international scene, they have earned several prestigious awards, including being four-time winners of the Audience Popularity Award at the prestigious Festival of the European Bluegrass Association — EWOB. The band’s motto is: “We play bluegrass for people!”
